For Teachers:   Teaching Math as an Arithmetic Progression

Re-Tally-8 can be played continuously throughout the elementary grades.  The instructor decides the level of play by selecting the operators (÷ - x +) to be used.

For early math learners, focus is put more on the creation of equations than on the score.  The goal throughout is to establish the child's ability to make valid equations.

For beginners, the game should involve only addition (+) tiles and next subtraction (-) tiles or a combination of the + and - tiles.  The x and ÷ operators are introduced in the game as the curriculum progresses.

Re-Tally-8 is a mathematics board game that is an excellent teaching tool for grades 2-7.

Play:  Four children or teams assemble, open the box, unfold the board, take number tiles and start.  Little preparation required.

Players score by putting equations on the board and adding up the numbers.  The level of involvement is high, the atmosphere is gently competitive and encourages appreciation of the number skill of other players.

Children can also play as buddies or in teams, creating a fun route to a smiling classroom.
  •  a teacher directed but child controlled learning experience
  • a fresh way to think about numbers
  • recasts negative into positive attitudes
  • consolidates already learned skills
  • an effective method for study of equations
  • emphasizes the importance of accuracy
  • rewards competence in arithmetic skills
  • encourages sharing of knowledge
  • fun for the active mind

Re-Tally-8 was developed to be of practical use to the elementary school mathematics teacher.

Mathematics is not the easiest subject to teach to young people.  They need to think with numbers by means of very strict rules which have to be learned and practiced.  Even a well prepared and skillful teacher can experience difficulty in motivating all children to learn and practice numeracy skills.

Everyday living as well as many of the skilled occupations depend upon accurate use of elementary school arithmetic.  This is also true for advancement in both high school and post-secondary education.

As a game, it is a fun activity familiar to children.  The presence of others who can help and advise when necessary is reassuring as they practice making equations.  The excitement of competition makes thinking with numbers natural and fun.
